In engineering and operations, the value of a digital twin—or more precisely a Visual Twin—depends on how closely it reflects reality at any given moment. Too often, digital twins are treated as deliverables that only become “accurate” once the as-built model is updated at the end of a project. This mindset undermines the true purpose of a twin: to serve as a reliable, living reference throughout the entire lifecycle of a facility or asset.

The Problem with Waiting for the As-Built

When the twin lags behind reality, teams are forced to work with incomplete or outdated information. Engineers can’t validate designs against real-world conditions, operators can’t trust the twin for accurate planning, and decisions carry unnecessary risk. Instead of being an active tool, the twin becomes a static snapshot—delivering value only after the fact, too late to influence design, construction, or commissioning outcomes.

Reality Capture as Ground Truth

The foundation of a truly valuable twin is reality capture. By continuously integrating scans, photogrammetry, or other capture methods, the twin evolves in sync with the physical asset. This makes it a ground-truth reference rather than a theoretical construct. Engineers gain visibility into ongoing changes, operators detect issues earlier, and stakeholders share a consistent understanding of what “real” actually means.

Continuous Value Across the Lifecycle

A dynamic, reality-enriched digital twin provides value at every stage:

  • During Design: Validate plans against site conditions without waiting for final updates.
  • During Operations: Rely on a trusted system for planning interventions, maintenance, and upgrades.

From Deliverable to Platform

The shift is clear: digital twins can no longer be static project outputs. They must become collaborative platforms, enriched by reality capture, and valuable from the first design decision through decades of operation. Organizations that embrace this continuous approach will reduce risk, lower costs, and unlock new levels of efficiency and insight.
