Overview
Ataris partnered with UK Docks and the UK Ministry of Defence’s DE&S Naval Ships Support Team to implement a digital twin solution for vessel maintenance and remote operations.
Using 3D laser scanning and Prevu3D’s digital twin platform, the team created an ultra-precise digital replica of a vessel, enabling remote access, improved maintenance planning, and reduced operational costs.

The Challenge: Remote Vessel Access and Limited Operational Visibility
DE&S-managed vessels operate in remote global locations, creating significant challenges for engineering, maintenance, and decision-making teams.
Key challenges included:
- Limited ability to access vessels remotely
- High costs and delays due to long-distance travel for inspections
- Lack of a centralized, up-to-date visual reference of vessel conditions
- Difficulty preparing for maintenance cycles occurring every 2.5 years
- Inefficient collaboration between onshore teams and onboard operations
In maritime environments, these limitations increase the risk of delays, miscommunication, and reactive maintenance planning.
Solution: 3D Digital Twin and Reality Capture for Remote Vessel Management
Ataris implemented a full-scale reality capture workflow, combined with Prevu3D’s platform, to create a photorealistic and highly accurate 3D digital twin of the vessel.
This solution enabled:
- Remote access to the vessel through a web-based 3D environment
- Accurate visualization of cabins, compartments, and engine rooms
- Improved preparation for maintenance and retrofit projects
- Real-time collaboration using a single source of truth
