Empowering the future of engineering workflows
At our first-ever user event, ConneXion 2024, we explored the digital twin landscape—from reality capture workflows to leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform engineering projects.
During the product demo, our team showcased key features launched over the past year and offered an exciting preview of what’s ahead.
As a customer-driven company, we prioritize understanding the why behind challenges to deliver meaningful solutions. Collaboration and innovation are at the heart of what we do, and customer feedback remains the cornerstone of our development roadmap.
Point cloud viewer
We’re renowned for our meshing engine, but sometimes meshes aren’t necessary. The Point Cloud Viewer, introduced earlier this year, allows users to effortlessly view, manage, and share raw point cloud data. Available on RealityPlatform, the viewer maintains the platform’s user-friendly experience, featuring a photosphere navigation mode for immersive walkthroughs of 360° site captures.
Device-based workflows
The Device-Based Workflow feature optimizes the upload and processing experience by tailoring workflows to the specific devices used. With increasing diversity in scanning devices—such as traditional scanners, SLAM devices, and others—this approach ensures better compatibility, improved data quality, and a more reliable pipeline.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, users select their device type during the upload process, enabling the system to request the exact data required for processing, including optional and device-specific files like trajectories or scalar fields. This fine-tuned approach enhances the user experience, supports more file formats, and ensures consistent, high-quality results while optimizing the use of additional data often embedded in scans.
Creating RealityAssets
In RealityPlan, the Asset Creation feature transforms unstructured data, like point clouds and meshes, into structured, reusable reality assets. By adding a layer of semantics to your environment, it allows users to define and segment assets intuitively and flexibly.
With tools like the Magic Wand and a multi-box asset creation system, users can quickly and accurately define even complex shapes without limitations. Unlike fully AI-driven solutions, this feature emphasizes user control, offering manual fallback options to refine or adjust results as needed. This pragmatic approach ensures reliability and flexibility, empowering designers and engineers to seamlessly structure their data for various applications.
Piping extraction
The Piping Extraction feature simplifies the complex process of defining pipes within point cloud data. Using a user-friendly, manual tool, users can quickly and precisely define pipe geometry by selecting key points along the pipe. This includes control over dimensions like diameter, enabling accurate and efficient modeling in just seconds.
As an ongoing development effort, the feature is designed to handle the challenges of intricate piping layouts, such as those found in food, beverage, and oil and gas industries. While the initial release focuses on manual tools for maximum user control and flexibility, an automated AI-driven approach is in progress, aiming to streamline piping detection further while retaining manual fallback options for fine-tuning and corrections.
Visual compare
The Visual Compare feature enables users to validate and compare their CAD models against scanned environments with ease. By aligning the two datasets, it highlights deviations and missing components through customizable color-coded thresholds. Users can visually identify differences, annotate defects, and publish layouts for corrections, ensuring models remain accurate and up-to-date.
Future integrations, such as with Autodesk Construction Cloud, will enhance issue tracking and streamline workflows, making Visual Compare a vital tool for maintaining alignment between designs and real-world conditions.
Space composition
The Space Composition feature revolutionizes the way multiple data inputs—such as drone scans, SLAM devices, and terrestrial scanners—are merged into a cohesive 3D environment. Instead of simply aligning point clouds, this feature enables users to combine multiple meshes dynamically, creating a seamless and accurate representation without gaps or performance loss.
Users can overlay, mask, and fine-tune data layers, ensuring precise alignment through control points and other advanced tools. This capability is ideal for updating digital twins over time, allowing users to integrate new captures, maintain asset information, and analyze areas requiring fresh scans for optimal accuracy. The feature is designed to handle diverse capture methods while preserving user experience and performance, ensuring a smooth workflow for keeping environments up-to-date.
Clash detection
The Clash Detection feature offers precise and ultrafast identification of object collisions within 3D environments. Unlike previous versions that provided basic red/green indicators, this enhanced tool pinpoints exact clash locations, making it easier to detect and resolve issues, even in large and complex models.
The tool delivers highly accurate results by analyzing clashes directly against scan data, eliminating false positives or “ghost clashes.” With processing times reduced to seconds or minutes, it provides a significant speed advantage over traditional solutions.
Additionally, upcoming enhancements, such as soft clash detection and clearance zones, will allow users to evaluate spacing requirements for equipment movement or installation, enabling better planning and risk management in complex environments.
RealityConnect for Revit
The RealityConnect for Revit plugin streamlines the integration of point cloud data into Revit workflows, eliminating the inefficiencies of traditional methods. Instead of importing entire datasets at high resolution, users can select specific regions, densities, or assets directly from Prevu3D, ensuring only relevant data is transferred.
The plugin maintains geolocation and coordinate systems, simplifying positioning and alignment while preserving data accuracy. Users can import assets as references or directly integrate them into Revit families, saving significant time on modeling and providing essential context for design projects. With its seamless platform-to-platform connectivity, RealityConnect enhances efficiency and precision in managing point cloud and mesh data for Revit users.
