The post What Happens When a Team Gets a New Tool first appeared on Prevu3D.

We opened our recent conversation with Andrea Burda, organizational psychologist and consultant on DB Systel GmbH’s Immersive Technology team, with a simple question for the live audience: when your team gets a new tool, what usually happens first?

The results came back almost evenly split. 40 percent said a few people jump in immediately. 47 percent said most people wait and watch. 13 percent said someone official has to mandate it. Not a single person picked “it gets ignored until someone’s forced to use it.”

That last number might be the most interesting one. Nobody in the room believed a tool just quietly disappeared. Everybody has watched a rollout stall, or watched one take off, they just disagree on how it usually starts.

To hear Burda’s answers in her own words, watch The Human Side of Digital Transformation on the session page.

Not About Labeling People

A personality framework is an unusual place to start a conversation about enterprise software, but it’s the right one. Andrea Burda leans on the Big Five, the same framework used across organizational psychology more broadly, to make sense of something every rollout runs into: every team is really five teams happening at once, one for each kind of person on it, and treating them all the same is often where the trouble starts.

“It’s not really about labeling people, but it’s really to understand reactions to change, to understand what those people need.”

Two groups tend to matter most, and they show up at different points. Early on, it’s the people already asking “can I already click here? Can I try it out?”

Before the demo’s even finished, the natural first movers worth approaching first. Later, and more consequentially, come the detail-oriented skeptics, the ones asking the harder questions that can look like resistance but rarely are.

Prepare for those questions in advance, and “usually those are the biggest fans in the end. They spread the links themselves, then we don’t even have to do the work ourselves.”

That tracks with something an attendee asked live: how do you manage skepticism from colleagues who aren’t used to new technology?

The answer wasn’t about convincing anyone. It was about sitting down with the most skeptical people early, one-on-one, and using their questions to find the gaps before they become everyone else’s objections too.

To hear Burda’s answers in her own words, watch The Human Side of Digital Transformation on the session page.

The Signs You’re Watching a Program, or a Stall

There’s a moment in every rollout where you can already tell which way it’s headed, and it comes down to the kind of questions people start asking.

When the questions turn toward use cases, “could I use it for this? Can I use it for that?”, that’s the tell. It’s a sign the conversation has moved past the technology itself and into something more useful: how it fits into the way people already work.

The opposite pattern is just as recognizable: if people are still stuck on whether it will even load, or whether their laptop can run it, that’s a barrier problem, not a value problem, and there’s more groundwork to do before the tool earns anyone’s trust.

Matching the Capture Method to the Actual Job

Prevu3D and DB Systel have been working together for three and a half years now, long enough to get concrete about how the two technologies at the center of that work actually get chosen.

“We don’t skew toward any capturing method. We looked at it also from the value perspective,” meaning the technology gets matched to the problem, not chosen by default. For getting maintenance teams oriented at a station before a visit, 360° capture wins because “it’s quite intuitive, you just look around, people can get familiar with the stations.”

For work requiring precise measurements or geometry, LiDAR earns its place instead.

For more on how the DB x PREVU3D partnership scaled, read the full case study.

In practice, that looks like a maintenance team reviewing a 360° walkthrough of a station before ever setting foot there, checking safe crossing points, seeing where tracks end, spotting which assets need attention.

Even if there are further questions, we can jump from the 3D model into different links and dig deeper if needed.

An audience question asked what a typical DB Systel project looks like in scan volume, and where the largest one has landed so far. The answer came down to logistics: smaller stations tend to get the 360° treatment, partly because they’re the ones requiring the most travel for maintenance teams to reach, while LiDAR has been used at a much larger scale, without hitting a ceiling yet.

What Leadership Actually Needs to Give This

Ask what leadership can actually do to help a tool get adopted, and the answer isn’t about mandates or top-down pressure.

Getting five different kinds of people comfortable with something new takes longer than a single announcement, and the payoff for that patience shows up later, once most of the early questions have already been answered and the tool has become part of how people already work.

A last audience question raised something worth sitting with: can a team’s personality shift as a project evolves, starting open and optimistic, then turning more cautious later if things fall behind?

The answer was a clear yes. The five traits aren’t fixed positions, they shift as people gain more experience, or more reasons for doubt.

It’s less a personality test and more a live read of where people are, at any given moment in the rollout.

The post Prevu3D and NavVis VLX4: Rethinking the Journey From Capture to Engineering first appeared on Prevu3D.

Today, reality capture is still surrounded by friction. A site gets scanned. Then people wait.

Data needs to be processed.

Models may need to be reconstructed.

Assets need to be identified and organized.

Files move between systems.

Engineering teams wait for usable information before they can get to the work they actually need to do.

Engineers want to plan a new layout, validate an engineering decision, prepare a simulation, train people or operate the facility, not spend their time preparing reality data.

As reality capture becomes an enterprise-scale process, this model doesn’t scale. Capturing more frequently or across hundreds of sites only creates more data, more hand-offs and more waiting.

Point cloud to mesh to classified CAD: the 24 hour run

When NavVis released the VLX4, they gave our team access to a sample dataset. Within less than 24 hours of receiving the dataset, we used RealityPlatform to create a high-fidelity mesh of the environment, segment and classify what was captured, and experiment with AI-generated 3D CAD. We then brought both reality and CAD—spatially aligned—directly into Autodesk Revit.

Some of these capabilities are already part of RealityPlatform, while others represent new workflows and automation we are actively developing. What matters is seeing how quickly the entire process can come together as one connected experience.

Watch one capture become an aligned Revit model

The significance isn’t any one of these capabilities. It’s what happens when the entire process becomes seamless, automated and connected.

RealityPlatform manages the physical environment and its different representations: point cloud, mesh, Gaussian Splat, RealityAssets and CAD. AI can increasingly understand and generate information from that reality.

RealityConnect then makes it available directly inside the applications where people actually work.

Instead of users managing reality data, converting files and waiting for models to be prepared, the infrastructure increasingly does that work for them.

Why a viewer cannot deliver a classified environment

Viewing reality data is only one small part of the workflow. The bigger challenge is everything that needs to happen after capture to make that reality usable across the enterprise. A platform approach changes that.

Reality can be processed, structured, segmented, classified, transformed into different visual representations, augmented with AI-generated CAD, and connected directly into the applications where people actually work.

Instead of asking users to manage scan data or move into a separate viewer, the platform manages the complexity behind the scenes and delivers the right representation of reality where it is needed.

The goal isn’t to help people spend more time with reality data. It’s to make reality data seamlessly available so they can spend more time designing, planning, simulating, training and operating.

Companies like NVIDIA, OpenAI, Anthropic and others are investing billions to solve increasingly complex vision, reasoning and generation problems, and those models will continue to improve at an incredible pace.

Our focus is to build the reality infrastructure that allows their models, and whatever comes next, to understand and act on the physical world at enterprise scale.

Our goal is to build the reality infrastructure that allows the best AI models to work with the physical world at scale.

What AI models do not provide

AI models are incredibly powerful, but they don’t provide the platform required to manage massive reality datasets, maintain spatial context, organize and persist assets, manage multiple representations, connect reality with enterprise information, or deliver the results into engineering systems.

That’s the role RealityPlatform is being built to play. Providing a framework where reality can be captured, structured, segmented and connected, then made accessible to the best AI models as they emerge. The intelligence can evolve without having to rebuild the underlying reality infrastructure every time a better model appears.

What AI-generated CAD makes possible next

AI-generated CAD is an exciting demonstration of what this makes possible, but it’s only the beginning. The same foundation can enable automated asset understanding, metadata generation, change detection, validation, engineering analysis and entirely new workflows we haven’t imagined yet.

The opportunity isn’t to build the best AI model. It’s to build the reality infrastructure that allows the best AI models to work with the physical world at scale.

From capture to aligned CAD in 1 day: what changes for engineering teams

None of this happens without great capture, and the quality of the VLX4 dataset gave us an incredible foundation to work from.

But what happened in the following 24 hours is the bigger story.

Reality was processed, structured, segmented and classified. AI was used to generate CAD. Reality and CAD were then brought together, spatially aligned, directly inside Revit.

Not as a collection of disconnected tools and manual steps, but as a connected platform-level workflow.

Where the reality capture industry goes from here

This is where we believe the industry is going. Capture technology will keep getting better. AI models will keep advancing at an incredible pace. The opportunity is to connect those innovations through an enterprise reality data layer that can manage the physical world at scale and make it available wherever people and AI need it.

CAD generation is just one early example of what becomes possible.

Less waiting. Less manual preparation. More automation. And reality seamlessly connected to the work that actually needs to get done.

That is Seamless Connected Reality — and we’re just getting started.

The post Prevu3D and NavVis VLX4: Rethinking the Journey From Capture to Engineering first appeared on Prevu3D.

How Prevu3D and Insta360 Enterprise built a practical framework for choosing between 360 camera capture and laser scanning, based on the decision at hand.

The post Reduce Time-to-Decision: A Framework for When to Grab a 360° Camera, and When to Call in a Scanner first appeared on Prevu3D.

When an engineer needs current site information, the default answer is usually the same: someone travels to the site, or the team waits for a scan to get scheduled.

In a recent poll of industrial and AEC professionals, half of respondents said exactly that, someone still has to go.

Jay Ure, Director of Customer Success at Prevu3D, hears a version of this problem constantly. “The question I hear most often is, what device should we scan with,” he says. “My answer is another question: what decision are you trying to make? Most days, the best capture tool is the one that’s already on site.”

In our most recent Expert XChange session, Jay sat down with Javier Zhang, who leads the Spatial Intelligence vertical at Insta360 Enterprise, to work through exactly when a 360° camera is the right call, and when it isn’t. Here’s what we learned.

The Old Barrier to Site Capture: Specialists, Equipment, and Waiting

For most of Javier’s six years working with industrial and construction teams, site capture meant a trained specialist, dedicated equipment, and a calendar slot weeks out. Everyone else on the team waited for the data to come back.

That’s changed. “Today, a site supervisor keeps an Insta360 in their vest pocket, presses one button, and walks their normal route,” Javier explains. “Anyone on site picks this up in minutes, not weeks.”

The Framework: Decision, Accuracy, and Who’s Holding the Camera

Once the barrier to capture drops, the real question becomes how to choose. A quick walkthrough is enough for project planning, remote reviews, or figuring out whether equipment will clear a corridor. Certified engineering deliverables, steel fabrication, anything with a tolerance attached, still call for a professional scanning or survey workflow, no exceptions.

The two aren’t in competition. As Javier puts it, “the light capture doesn’t replace the scan, it makes the scan count.”

A quick 360° pass lets a team scope the job, plan access, and prepare questions, so that when a scanning crew does arrive, every minute of their time gets spent where it actually matters.

The last piece is simply who’s available to do the capturing, and this is where the barrier drop matters most. It’s no longer a specialist’s job. It’s whoever happens to be on site that day.

What the Hardware Actually Has to Handle

None of this works if the camera can’t survive an actual job site, so the session spent real time on what the Insta360 X-series is built for. The setup itself is close to trivial: mount the camera on a stick, set it to Timelapse 360 mode, and walk. What matters more is what happens to that footage in the field, climbing stairs, ducking under scaffolding, moving through inconsistent lighting, without the capture falling apart.

Javier was equally candid about where it doesn’t hold up. Low light remains the main limitation, and reflective surfaces or genuinely hazardous areas still call for a trained operator and proper scanning equipment. Insta360 also just released the X6, built around two custom sensors that meaningfully improve low-light performance, a direct answer to the one limitation the team keeps running into on job sites.

Where This Is Heading: Gaussian Splats

The conversation also touched on 3D Gaussian Splatting, the increasingly visible reconstruction technique that’s been showing up across social media. Insta360 footage can feed directly into a splat, and the appeal is obvious once you see one: near-photorealistic reconstructions, built faster than a traditional mesh.

The limit is just as clear. “Today, a splat is mainly a visualization tool,” Javier says. “It doesn’t provide the precise, measurable geometry of a point cloud or mesh.” Jay’s addition matters here too: Prevu3D’s RealityPlatform now holds splats as a standalone layer alongside meshes and point clouds in the same environment, so a team can pick whichever representation fits the task without spinning up a separate project to do it.

Two Companies, Two Very Different Problems

Two customer stories anchored the session, and they make the case better than any framework could on its own.

Topo3D, a Montreal-based service provider, uses a 360° walkthrough before they ever quote a scanning job, capturing general site conditions and visuals before they prepare a proposal. As Jay put it, “that’s the framework working as a business model. The light capture makes the scan count.”

Deutsche Bahn (DB Systel) was solving a scale problem instead. Documenting hundreds of small rail stations with LiDAR alone would have spread specialist time impossibly thin. Their answer was to build the documentation process around affordable 360 cameras, letting staff with no 3D background capture and share models on their own, with each spatial asset linking back to the operational metadata their maintenance teams already rely on.

Same underlying logic, two completely different scales: match the method to the task in front of you, not a standard you apply everywhere.

What Came Up in the Room

The live Q&A pulled out a few questions worth flagging on their own. One attendee asked about mixing 360° footage with LiDAR in the same space, Jay confirmed the two can be aligned together inside Prevu3D’s RealityComposer tool, regardless of whether the scan data comes from SLAM, TLS, or a drone. Another asked whether Insta360 cameras carry GPS data the way scanning equipment does; they don’t natively, though location data can come through connected accessories or a paired phone.

The most specific question of the session came from someone documenting manhole structures who was looking for an alternative to inverted tripod scanning. Jay’s answer was direct: a 360 camera can work for that kind of scoping capture, provided you plan for the minimum recording length, but if the deliverable needs to be survey-grade, that’s still a job for dedicated scanning equipment.

The Bigger Picture

None of this argues against laser scanning, the session was direct about that limit throughout. It argues against something narrower: letting the absence of a scheduled scan become the reason a decision sits and waits.

Somewhere in Deutsche Bahn’s network right now, there’s a station where the real layout of the equipment room only lives in one person’s memory. Not because anyone did anything wrong, it’s often just what happens at scale. When you’re responsible for thousands of sites across a continent, documentation is always racing to catch up with reality.

This is the quiet problem behind most digital transformation efforts. The technology to fix it usually isn’t the hard part. Getting people, hundreds of them, across dozens of roles, most of whom didn’t ask for a new tool, to actually use it, is.

That’s the conversation we’re having in our next Expert Xchange session with Andrea Burda, who works on organizational development and change management within DB Systel’s Immersive Technology team. Andrea has spent her career on the human side of transformation. For the past few years, that’s meant helping Deutsche Bahn scale 3D visualization across its stations, turning a strong pilot into a program that field teams, maintenance crews, and leadership all actually rely on.

Understanding People Before the Platform

One of the more surprising threads in our prep conversations with Andrea has been how much of successful adoption comes down to understanding people before you understand the platform.

Andrea uses the Big Five personality framework to think through how different people respond to a new workflow, not to label anyone, but to recognize that hesitation isn’t resistance, it’s information.

Some people need to see a colleague try it first. Some need to know exactly what happens if they get it “wrong.” Knowing the difference changes how you introduce a tool, and who you ask to champion it early.

Winning Both Rooms at Once

It’s also, Andrea points out, never just a bottom-up or top-down problem. A rollout that only wins over end users but never gets budget and leadership buy-in stalls just as fast as one with executive sponsorship and no one on the ground actually using it. The programs that stick tend to win both rooms at once.

Successful change happens when leadership provides clear direction and visible support, while end users are involved early enough to understand the value, build trust, and shape how the change actually works in practice.

— Andrea Burda, Consultant, DB Systel GmbH

Matching the Tool to the Task

At Deutsche Bahn, that also shows up in how the technology itself is introduced. Not every station needs the same level of detail captured the same way.

For fast, low-barrier documentation across hundreds of stations, DB Systel’s teams often start with 360° video, which almost anyone can capture with an affordable camera, or even a phone camera, with no specialized training required. For higher-stakes or more complex sites, this gives way to more detailed LiDAR-based capture.

Matching the tool to the task, rather than defaulting to the most sophisticated option available, is part of what makes adoption feel manageable rather than overwhelming.

We primarily use 360° capture to create fast, scalable digital coverage and enable quick implementation of the right use cases. The key is not to use the most sophisticated technology available, but the one that delivers the value people actually need.

— Andrea Burda, Consultant, DB Systel GmbH

None of this is about the tool being clever, but more so about people trusting that it makes their day easier, not harder, and that’s a much more human problem than most technology conversations give it credit for.

Facilities and AECO teams can now transform existing RICOH THETA site capture workflows into navigable industrial as-built environments without changing hardware or field processes.

The post Prevu3D, RICOH Partner to Turn THETA Captures into As-Built Digital Twins first appeared on Prevu3D.

MONTREAL, QC — May 2026 — Prevu3D, the industrial reality platform that transforms as-built data into navigable 3D environments, and RICOH, a global technology company trusted across enterprise and industrial imaging, today announced a strategic partnership enabling RICOH THETA users to import their 360° footage directly into Prevu3D’s RealityPlatform and generate navigable, georeferenced digital environments of their facilities.

For facilities managers, AECO project teams, and digital transformation leads already using RICOH THETA devices for site documentation, the integration is an immediate capability upgrade. The same capture workflow now produces a fully explorable as-built environment, ready for site assessment, engineering review, and operational decision-making.

360° Video to Point Cloud, Mesh & Digital Twin

RICOH THETA cameras are already widely deployed for documentation and site communication across AECO and facilities. The limitation has always been that raw 360° footage, while useful for visual reference, does not give teams a workable representation of the space.

Prevu3D changes that with its 360° video ingestion engine automatically reconstructs RICOH THETA footage into a complete spatial dataset (panoramic images, point clouds, meshes, and Gaussian splats) from a single walkthrough. The result is a navigable 3D environment that teams can explore, annotate, and connect to engineering workflows, all from a capture they were already making.

CAD, BIM & Digital Twin Software Integration

RICOH360’s core customer base maps directly to Prevu3D’s target buyers. This partnership creates a natural upgrade path: RICOH THETA users gain access to a more powerful output from data they’re already capturing, without any change to their existing hardware or field process.

The Prevu3D RealityPlatform manages as-built environments across the full quality spectrum, from 360° video through to high-precision LiDAR and direct CAD integration with Siemens Designcenter NX and Autodesk Revit. RICOH THETA integration is the entry point: fast to deploy and immediately useful for site assessment and early documentation.

The teams buying RICOH THETA cameras are exactly the teams who need to start building their as-built world. They’re already walking the sites. They’re already capturing. With this partnership, that capture becomes the foundation of a navigable digital environment they can actually work from.

— Michel Besner, CEO, Prevu3D

Availability: RICOH THETA to Navigable Digital Twin, Ready Now

RICOH THETA integration is available now within Prevu3D’s RealityPlatform. Teams can begin processing footage through the platform’s 360° video ingestion workflow with no additional hardware configuration required.
Insta360 footage directly inside Prevu3D’s RealityPlatform™ and generate navigable, georeferenced 3D environments of their facilities.

For the first time, teams can create a usable industrial as-built environment using a lightweight 360° camera workflow already accessible to most field operations. No LiDAR investment, no specialized capture crew, and no lengthy processing pipeline required.

One 3D Walk. One As-built Working Environment.

Prevu3D’s 360° video ingestion engine automatically reconstructs Insta360 footage into a complete spatial dataset: panoramic images, point clouds, meshes, and Gaussian splats from a single capture. The output is not only a visual tour but a navigable 3D environment that integrates directly into engineering and operations workflows.

This is purpose-built for teams that need something solid to work with now, before a full LiDAR scan or CAD model is even commissioned. The Insta360 X4, X5, and RS series are all natively supported.

The gap between the physical world and the software where decisions are made has always been one of the most expensive problems in industrial operations.

Teams invest in scanning equipment, capture thousands of square metres of facilities, they spend weeks, or months, wrestling with file formats, data silos, and software compatibility before a single engineer can act on that data.

3D Scanning Capture — LiDAR, 360 Video and Drone

The first step is uploading your scan data to RealityPlatform™. Prevu3D supports every major capture method in use today:

Terrestrial LiDAR (BLK360, RTC360, P-series and more)

SLAM point clouds (BLK2Go, BLK2GoPulse)

Drone mapping

360 Video

Uploads are device-specific, the platform knows what it is receiving and processes accordingly, without requiring manual configuration. What you get on the other side is the fastest, most accurate meshing engine in the industry, producing visually rich 3D mesh models ready for analysis and collaboration.

3D Assets Management — One Source of Truth for Your Spatial Data

Once captured, your data lives in RealityPlatform™, a centralized hub that gives every stakeholder access to the same ground truth. Consider saving on emailing point cloud files. Forget version conflicts. No more “which scan is the latest one?”

Two tools make this possible:

RealityComposer combines scans from multiple sessions, devices, and locations into a single unified digital environment. TLS datasets, SLAM datasets, drone LiDAR, and 360 video can all be merged, aligned, and layer-masked into one coherent model—a true single visual twin of your facility.

RealityAssets adds an intelligent layer on top of that model. Assets can be isolated, identified, and tagged, with AI-powered magic wand selection accelerating what used to take hours. Every asset carries its properties, making your 3D environment not just a visual reference, but a queryable, actionable database of your physical infrastructure.

Connect — Your As-Built World, Right Where You Work

This is where Prevu3D becomes a force multiplier. Through RealityConnect™, the as-built environment streams directly into the engineering, simulation, and design tools your teams already rely on. No exports, no conversions, no data degradation.

RealityConnect™ currently supports eight native connectors:

The Prevu3D Digital Twin Ecosystem

Prevu3D sits at the centre of a growing ecosystem. On the left: every major reality capture modality feeding into RealityPlatform™. On the right: the enterprise software stack (CAD/BIM, simulation, ERP/AIM, and OPS/IoT) connected through RealityConnect™.

This is not a point solution. It is infrastructure for how industrial organizations manage their physical world.

Digital Twins for Industrial Digital Transformation

Prevu3D is purpose-built for the teams that own physical operations and need their spatial data to be actionable, not archived:

Facility managers and plant engineers who need accurate as-built documentation without delays

Manufacturing and process engineers planning layout changes, line reconfigurations, or equipment installations

BIM coordinators and AECO professionals working on renovation, retrofit, or construction projects

Digital twin leads integrating scan data into simulation and operations platforms

IT and data teams responsible for spatial data governance across multiple sites

Why Reality Capture Is the Future Of Engineering Workflows

Reality capture hardware has gotten faster, cheaper, and more accurate. The bottleneck is no longer the scan, but what happens after. Data sits in proprietary formats. Engineers work from outdated PDFs. Decisions get made without spatial context.

Prevu3D eliminates that bottleneck. The platform is designed to collapse the distance between reality and decision, giving every team member, in every tool, access to a living, accurate model of the world they are working in.

Somewhere right now, a major US electrical utility has more than 1,500 substations captured as point cloud data. Survey teams captured the facilities with 3D laser scanning, registered the point cloud data with precision, and delivered the final datasets to the utility. The utility owns a detailed digital record of its infrastructure. Yet in many cases, that valuable reality capture data remains inaccessible to the engineers, planners, and operations teams who need it to make decisions.

And it has done almost nothing, because the people who need to act on it can’t open a point cloud file, don’t have the software, and don’t have the ten years of training it takes to navigate a sea of points without getting lost.

Why Industrial Digital Transformation Projects Stall

This is the real bottleneck in industrial digital transformation. Not the capture. The scan is the easy part. What breaks down is everything after: delivery, access, decision-making, adoption. The gap between a point cloud on a server and a facility team that actually knows what they have is where most digital transformation initiatives quietly stall.

Digital Twins Turn Spatial Data Into Decisions

At CES 2025, the Siemens CEO took the stage alongside the CEO of Nvidia for a keynote on AI and digital twins.

The centerpiece case study was PepsiCo, which demonstrated how digital twins accelerate decision-making. By digitizing facilities and working within accurate 3D spatial data from day one, PepsiCo’s teams validated layout options and made critical planning decisions weeks before CAD models were complete.

One specific project explored whether existing warehouse facilities could accommodate an additional layer of racking. A fifth layer on a four-layer system means 20% more storage capacity without building anything new. They validated it digitally, made the decision fast, and moved.

From Reality Capture to Operational Efficiency

The result was a 20% efficiency gain across those facilities. The first step in achieving it was scanning the space.

That’s what’s possible when captured data actually reaches the people making decisions, in a form they can use. Four practitioners who operate at this intersection every day ( a surveyor, a CAPEX engineer, a reality capture manager at WSP, and a technology leader at Tetra Tech) recently sat down to talk about what that looks like in practice. Here’s what they said.

In manufacturing, the clock starts before the scanner does

Construction and manufacturing look like the same job from the outside. They’re not.

In construction, a missed scan setup means coming back tomorrow. In manufacturing, it can mean waiting a year. Jonathan Bouffard, Principal Partner at Topo3D, has been doing reality capture for 14 years. When his work shifted from infrastructure into industrial facilities, everything about project planning changed.

You might have one hour. We did 200 scans in a single hour at a manufacturing plant—seven scanners running simultaneously. In infrastructure, if you don’t finish, you come back. In manufacturing, you don’t have that luxury.

— Jonathan Bouffard, Principal Partner, Topo3D

The pre-capture walk at a noisy industrial facility happens in silence. Bouffard’s team uses a 360-degree camera because conversation is impossible on the floor. The planning session happens off-site, reviewing footage. Every setup position is mapped before a scanner is unpacked.

Adam Moutafis, Reality Capture Manager for the Southern US at WSP, has a project coming up: a 15-day plant shutdown, 3.5 million square feet to capture. When that facility comes back online, the window closes for another year. Sébastien Cliche at Tetra Tech has scanned pharmaceutical environments where the available downtime was 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. One hour. That’s it.

The discipline required is categorically different from any other environment. Digital transformation in an industrial facility begins the moment the surveyor walks the floor. Not when any software is opened.

Data that reaches one person reaches nobody

The substation problem Moutafis described isn’t an anomaly. It’s the default outcome when point cloud data is treated as a file delivery rather than a shared operational asset.

Even my kids look at my point cloud work and ask how I know what I’m looking at. I tell them: ten years, that’s how. But put it in 3D and anyone can understand spatially what’s going on. The context is just there.

— Adam Moutafis, Reality Capture Manager — Southern US, WSP

When a point cloud is delivered as a proprietary file to one specialist, it reaches one specialist. But when that same data is accessible as a navigable environment via a URL, shareable without software installs and openable by the maintenance manager, the ops director, and the engineer planning next year’s capital project, it becomes something the whole organization can use.

Bouffard puts it directly: clients who commission a scan are often sitting on far more value than they realize, because they’re thinking about one deliverable for one person. Prevu3D changes the delivery model. The data doesn’t change, but the reach does.

If you don’t get that data in front of the people who need it within the first few days, you lose the window. Everyone has 30 projects on their mind. It goes in the backlog and sometimes never comes back out.

— Adam Moutafis, Reality Capture Manager — Southern US, WSP

Accessibility isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the difference between data that drives decisions and data that collects dust.

Model what matters. Leave the rest as mesh.

A full BIM model of an industrial facility is expensive, slow, and most of the time unnecessary. The targeted approach works differently: model only what a specific decision requires, and leave everything else accessible as geometry. Faster, cheaper, and more likely to actually happen.

Moutafis gave the numbers plainly. A client says they want a model of their substation. What they actually need is two transformers modeled. The rest is noise.

Targeted modeling: seven working days, under $10,000. Full model proposal: $40,000 to $50,000—and it never would have happened. The client gets what they need. We move. Everyone wins.

— Adam Moutafis, Reality Capture Manager — Southern US, WSP

He now builds the cost into project proposals as a line item. Small enough as a percentage of overall bid that the question rarely gets asked, but delivering enough value that it’s become the standard opening move with new clients. A Trojan horse, he calls it. The work earns the relationship.

The shift this requires is reframing the client conversation: not how much does a model cost, but what decisions do you need to make, and what data does each one actually require. That’s a different sale. It’s also a more honest one.

Find the clash in design, not on site

In active industrial facilities, a clash found during construction execution is a completely different problem than one caught in design. One is a model revision. The other is stopped work, contractor calls, rescheduled equipment, and production downtime.

Malik Sammouda, President of Élémentaire Consultants, does CAPEX project management across the food industry: facility modifications, equipment relocations, production line reconfigurations. Almost always in active plants. Almost always under margin pressure.

It’s extremely rare to have an accurate as-built when you start a project. Scanning gives you the environment immediately. You can do two or three design iterations before you even present to your client—something you simply could not do in the field.

— Malik Sammouda, President, Élémentaire Consultants

The digital environment doesn’t just surface clashes earlier. It changes who’s in the room when decisions get made. Sammouda describes client reviews where the people who actually run the facility, the ones who know the plant in their bones, can walk through a planned installation digitally, see what the contractor will encounter, and raise the practical constraints that never appear in a drawing review.

Someone around the table says, ‘Did you think about this constraint?’—something that would normally show up as a problem on site. That’s the kind of thing you want surfacing in the conference room, not during mobilization.

— Malik Sammouda, President, Élémentaire Consultants

There’s a second-order benefit that often gets overlooked: scope documentation. A scope of work built from a digital twin, with annotated geometry, clear spatial relationships, and visual references, produces contractor bids based on what they’ll actually encounter. That’s fewer change orders and surprises for a cleaner project.

Adoption happens when the tool is simply better

Sébastien Cliche, Innovation & Technology at Tetra Tech, has introduced a lot of new tools into large engineering organizations. His read on what actually drives adoption is less about technology and more about the moment when a person stops using the old way because the new way is just obviously better.

The moment clients can see their facility in a way they’ve never seen it before—that’s when the conversation shifts. They start sending the link to their team. They start seeing what they actually have.

— Sébastien Cliche, Innovation & Technology, Tetra Tech

The example he gave was striking: infrastructure maintenance professionals, old-school technicians accustomed to paper-based documentation and manual tagging.

When presented with a sufficiently detailed navigable environment, they stopped using their paper records. Not because anyone told them to, but because the digital version was faster and more accurate than what they’d been doing for years.

On AR and VR, Cliche is measured. Mobile AR has real operational value in regulated environments where a headset would create safety and compliance issues; an iPad on the floor is practical where a vision-restricting helmet is not. Full VR has a role in stakeholder presentations, the wow moment that wins a bid. But the ROI on VR hardware and training doesn’t yet justify broad deployment for most industrial use cases. The technology is there, but the economics aren’t.

His cleaner framing: a well-built navigable 3D environment does most of what VR promises, without the headset, without the training, and without the budget line.

The questions clients don’t know to ask

The most useful question from the audience wasn’t about technology. It was about motivation: why do clients actually undertake this? What’s driving the decision?

The answers: Cliche’s team reduced a monthly maintenance documentation task from 160 hours to four. Sammouda managed a 2,000-piece equipment relocation across a live facility by modeling movement paths and sequences digitally before a single piece was touched.

At a salt mine, Tetra Tech used the platform to determine whether equipment could physically pass through underground tunnels and canceled a planned shutdown because the digital simulation showed them a viable route.

But the most common entry point, the one Moutafis sees over and over, is simpler: asset inventory.

The most prevalent use case is asset inventory — having the client know what’s in their space first. From there you move to targeted modeling, then engineering-grade work. You have your sandbox and you build on it.

— Adam Moutafis, Reality Capture Manager — Southern US, WSP

Knowing what’s there is the foundation. Everything else gets built on top of it.

Once the gates are open—people start asking questions they never thought to ask before. Robot path planning. Layout optimization. It stems right back to that first question: what do I actually have?

— Jason Brynford-Jones, Chief Product Officer, Prevu3D

Clients can’t request capabilities they don’t know exist. The practitioners making inroads in this space aren’t waiting to be asked. They show what’s possible and let the questions follow.

The gap isn’t the technology

he technology is mature. 3D laser scanners that capture millions of points per second. Reality capture platforms that process raw scan data into navigable, shareable digital twin environments in hours. Integrations that push as-built data directly into the engineering and design workflows where decisions get made. All of it exists. None of it is the bottleneck.

The gap is delivery. It’s the distance between data captured for one person in one format and data that reaches every person who needs it in a form they can actually use. Between a facility that ran a 3D scan three years ago and still doesn’t know what it has. Between a clash found in a model and one found on site.

The practitioners closing that gap share a common approach. 3D laser scanning and reality capture are only the starting point. The real value comes from making digital twin data accessible to the people making decisions.

Models are built around operational needs, stakeholders engage with facility data before capital is committed, and the as-built model is maintained as a living digital asset.

This approach transforms spatial data into a long-term resource for maintenance, engineering, capital planning, and industrial digital transformation

That’s what digital transformation in industrial facilities actually looks like. Not a platform. A practice.

Point clouds are everywhere in modern facilities and manufacturing environments. But having the data is only half the battle. If that data lives on someone’s hard drive, requires specialist workflows to process, and slows down the tools your engineers actually use, it stops being an asset and starts being a bottleneck.

That’s exactly the problem Prevu3D RealityConnect plugin solves for Siemens Designcenter NX users.

The Problem With Point Clouds Alone

Point clouds capture physical reality in incredible detail. But in practice, they create serious workflow challenges:

They don’t represent a single version of the truth. Files get copied, stored locally, and quickly become outdated.

Heavy POD files degrade performance inside NX and require preprocessing before engineers can use them.

Teams often work with temporary stand-ins or estimates instead of actual as-built conditions, leading to rework and delays.

Engineers are forced to switch between disconnected viewers and their design tools, breaking the workflow.

A Single Source of Truth for As-Built Data

Prevu3D RealityPlatform Digital Twin Software aggregates all your reality capture sources into one centralized platform. Whether your data comes from terrestrial laser scanners, SLAM/mobile devices, drones, or 360 video, it all flows into a single environment that your entire team can access.

From there, Prevu3D RealityPlatform Digital Twin Software automatically transforms that raw capture data into high-fidelity, optimized 3D meshes, ready for visualization, navigation, and engineering workflows. No preprocessing pipelines or specialist scan-to-CAD workflows. No waiting.

RealityConnect: As-Built Data, Directly Inside Siemens NX

With the RealityConnect plugin for Siemens Designcenter NX, that as-built environment streams directly into your NX session as a lightweight, optimized 3D mesh.

Your team stays inside NX, works at full performance, and makes decisions based on what was actually built.

Inside RealityConnect plugin for Siemens Designcenter NX , your team can:

Navigate the as-built environment as if they were on site

Stream precise segmented RealityAssets directly into the design workflow

Use NX sectioning tools to inspect internal components

Perform measurements and clearance validation against real-world conditions

Start engineering work immediately instead of waiting weeks for complete CAD reconstruction

The As-Built Becomes an Engineering Asset

One of the biggest shifts RealityConnect plugin for Siemens Designcenter NX enables is conceptual: the as-built environment is no longer a static reference file. It becomes a live, reusable engineering asset.

Instead of engineers working against assumptions or temporary stand-ins, they measure and validate against exactly what was built. Instead of waiting for a complete CAD reconstruction before work can begin, design and simulation start from day one.

The result? Success measured in days instead of weeks.

See It at Realize LIVE 2026

The Prevu3D team will be demonstrating RealityConnect for Siemens Designcenter NX live at Realize LIVE Americas 2026, June 1–4 at Huntington Place in Detroit. Find us at Pavillon Row #6.

For decades, the industrial world has operated on a quiet assumption: that the digital model is close enough to the real thing. CAD files. Engineering drawings. BIM models built from scratch, layer by layer, over weeks or months.

Close enough, until it isn’t.

Until a brownfield modification doesn’t survive first contact with the actual facility. Until a maintenance window runs long because an issue that could have been caught virtually gets discovered on-site, with crews mobilized and production stopped. Until a decision made with confidence in a boardroom turns out to have been made three steps removed from the source.

This is the as-built gap. And it is costing industrial organizations far more than most have calculated.

CAD models are great, but they won’t have all the details you need to make decisions.

Michel Besner has been watching this problem compound across industries for years. As CEO of Prevu3D, he’s direct about what’s at the root of it.

The challenge for today’s designers, engineers, and owner-operators is that CAD files and drawings can never truly be the source of truth—they always lack the details of the real world. A world which frequently changes, has defects and imperfections, none of which exists in the computer model.

The deeper issue, he argues, isn’t a data problem. It’s a trust problem.

These models can take weeks to build, and by the time they’re done, reality has already moved on. What’s often overlooked is that the CAD data was originally derived from scans of the physical world. The industry has always had access to reality. It just hasn’t had a way to work directly from the one source it can actually trust.

The first era of reality capture (laser scanning, photogrammetry, cloud-native visualization) solved a real problem. It made the as-built world accessible.

Engineers in Houston could walk through a facility in Rotterdam without booking a flight. Scan programs scaled across sites and business units.

But somewhere along the way, accessible became the finish line. Platforms competed on rendering quality. On storage efficiency. On how fast a point cloud could stream to a browser. The scan became the product.

It isn’t anymore.

From Point Cloud to Working Environment

Jason Brynford-Jones, Chief Product Officer at Prevu3D, is clear about where most spatial tools fall short.

Most spatial tools give you a point cloud and stop there. That’s a starting point, not a working environment.

The distinction matters enormously in practice. A point cloud is a photograph of a facility. An asset-based environment is a living record, one where every piece of equipment has an identity, a location, and a history.

When something changes, you know what changed, where it is, and what it connects to. It’s the difference between a photograph of a facility and a living record of assets that must connect everywhere.

Prevu3D ingests from terrestrial LiDAR, handheld SLAM scanners, drone footage, and 360° video, and critically, it combines them. Different sources, different times, different scales, all coming together into one usable 3D environment.

“The as-built is never a snapshot,” Brynford-Jones says. “It’s a living record that has to be managed.”

That living record then flows directly into the tools where decisions actually get made — CAD environments like Siemens NX and Autodesk Revit, streaming in real time, available inside customers’ existing workflows.

“Reality is the baseline on day one. But with Prevu3D, decisions no longer have to wait. We can take reality capture from anywhere and deliver it everywhere.”

The Role of AI: Turning Fragments into Truth

None of this works at industrial scale without AI. Kevin Ouellet, CTO of Prevu3D, explains why the platform was built around it from the ground up, not bolted on after the fact.

AI isn’t an add-on to Prevu3D—it’s what makes the platform useful at scale. Capture data arrives from everywhere, often in fragments. With AI, we turn those fragments into clean geometry, usable assets with attached semantics, and a change history that tracks reality over time.

That transformation, from raw scan data to something engineers and autonomous systems can actually rely on, is what separates operational infrastructure from a viewer.

The implications extend well beyond engineering workflows. As physical AI accelerates, the demand for environments that autonomous systems can actually learn from is growing fast. And a CAD model, Ouellet argues, simply cannot serve that purpose.

A robot operating in an industrial facility doesn’t learn from theoretical models, it learns from what it will actually encounter. A CAD model doesn’t reflect changes, moved objects, or the complex surface interactions a sensor hits in the real world. To train autonomous systems, you need a true as-built environment, not an assumption.

The roadmap reflects this. Continuous learning pipelines. Change detection. Models that adapt without ever breaking traceability.

“The physical world never stops changing. Neither will we.”

The Cost of the Gap and What Closes It

The organizations that have started closing the as-built gap are finding the results go beyond efficiency. They’re foundational.

An engineering firm that once spent 60 hours manually reconstructing a wall in Revit now generates an accurate as-built model in 2 hours and imports it as native, editable components. A turbomachinery services team documented a 75% reduction in downtime duration after moving pre-installation work into a virtual environment.

An oil and gas operator discovered a third option for equipment placement, one that saved nearly $3 million in capital expenditure and 14 weeks of project schedule, because the platform let them iterate on scenarios in days rather than commission months of modeling work.

These aren’t exceptional outcomes. They become routine when the decision gap closes.

What the next platform looks like is already clear: it integrates directly into engineering environments, enables decisions before construction begins, works across the full asset lifecycle, and scales without creating new complexity.

The distinction, as Besner frames it, is the difference between a library and a power grid.

When reality data lives in a viewer, it answers questions for people who know how to go looking. When it becomes infrastructure—embedded in engineering environments, connected to maintenance systems, integrated with the tools teams already use—it starts driving decisions before anyone has to ask.

The as-built gap is not a technology problem waiting to be solved. The technology exists. The question is whether industrial organizations are positioned to capture its value or to keep funding the rework that comes from working from assumptions.

Prevu3D is the operational as-built platform for industrial teams. It turns reality capture data into connected 3D environments that engineering, operations, and compliance teams can act on from anywhere.

The post The As-Built Gap: Why Reality Is Now Where Industrial Decisions Begin first appeared on Prevu3D.
